3 Reasons Social Media Marketing Is a Must in 2020
As a smart business owner, you already know that if you want to get through the nightmare that 2020 has become with a strong, stable and profitable business, you’re going to have to market your way out of it!
As the saying goes, you’re either growing or your dying – and good marketing is what makes any business grow.
But where should you be putting your marketing money in 2020?
Over the last few weeks I’ve already spoken about PPC (Google Ads, Facebook Ads etc) and SEO as key parts of your marketing arsenal. But this week I want to talk about social media because in this new and harsh post-covid world social media is now more important than ever.
Here’s 3 reasons why…
1: People Are Spending More Time On Social Media Than Ever Before
Thanks to the lockdown, working from home and the isolation we’ve all experienced this year, more and more people have turned to social media to ease the loneliness and keep them entertained.
The number of users on Facebook increased by 200 million in the first quarter of 2020, compared to the same quarter the previous year. Instagram has more than 500 million daily active users and YouTube boasts more than 1 billion hours of watch time every single day!
But Tiktok has really been the star of 2020 so far, with 200 million downloads in the first quarter alone. While Tiktok is still a platform for the younger generations, thanks to the lockdown its age demographic has increased – with many in their 30s and 40s now getting involved.
So what does this mean for your business? It means that if you want to reach out to your target market you can find them on Social Media.
2: They Don’t Have To Be Looking For You
Google is great. But it only works if your clients are actively searching for you. With social media, you can get your business in front of your target market without them even looking for your product or service.
Social media, whether it’s paid ads or organic content gives you the opportunity to showcase your business to the people who need your goods or services while they’re hanging out with their friends online.
Think of it like the TV ads of the 21st century.
Back in the days of live TV, you weren’t actively searching for a new sofa while watching Strictly Come Dancing, but when the DFS ad popped up it snuck the idea in your mind.
It’s the same with social media. Your target market might not be searching for your goods or service, but if you pop up in their news feed while they are mid-scroll you might just plant that seed of an idea.
3: People Want To See That You’re Still In Business
And finally, 2020 has been a hell of a year for all businesses and the economy in general. Sadly, as the true economical impact of the lockdown to show, as the furloughs end and the government support is phased out, we’re going to see more and more businesses close their doors.
What this means for the consumers is that they’re going to become a little more wary about who they spend their money with. They’ll want to know that your company is alive and kicking before they trust you with their cash.
Social media is likely the first place they’ll go. An outdated, unloved or “dead” social media profile will cast doubt on whether your business is still trading, eroding the trust you’ve worked hard to build with your prospect.
By keeping your social media profiles alive and up to date, with fresh, unique and engaging content you’ll not only show people that you’re still in business but you’ll increase that connection with them – building on your relationship and nudging them closer to making that purchase.
Which Social Media Platforms Are Right For Your Business?
Every social media platform has a different demographic and so not every platform will be right for your business. While there are some simple differences I can easily explain here – such as LinkedIn is more B2B, TikTok is better for the younger generations and Instagram is great for visually appealing businesses – the social media strategy that will work for you will depend entirely on your unique business.
