Are you too close for comfort?

Some mornings whilst having my breakfast I watch re-runs of Frasier. For those of you who haven’t seen it – because it was back in the dim and distant Noughties, Dr Frasier Crane is a radio psychiatrist and his brother, Niles, is also a psychiatrist. It is a comedy and sometimes the best sitcoms have some of the most profound messages. Afterlife is also another brilliant case in point.

Anyway, back to Dr. Crane. Niles spent the first seven series in unrequited love with Daphne Moon, his father’s physical therapist but, as in all good love stories, they got it together eventually. Daphne later gained an awful lot of weight and had to go off to the "fat farm". Frasier and his father could never understand why Niles couldn’t see what was happening to his beloved Daphne. However, when she returned slim and svelte once more, she told Niles that she had spoken to a therapist at the health spa. Gloria, the therapist told Daphne it was because Niles was always in denial of her weight gain because he had put her on a pedestal for so long that he was failing (or refusing) to see she had any faults. Niles was accused of being too close to Daphne to see her failings.

And cue interference from brother Frasier because Niles was refusing to believe a "mere therapist named Gloria!" was more insightful than someone with his distinguished qualifications. Frasier affirmed that it was actually ok to believe Daphne was not perfect, and he (Niles) and Daphne should talk to one another about their "imperfections".

However, the subsequent discussion resulted in apologies all round and Daphne said she would cook them a meal to celebrate. Niles, who having taken advice from his also eminent psychiatrist brother, told Daphne that actually they would eat out because her English cooking was so terrible . . . In retaliation Daphne accused Niles of being a pretentious snob because of his love of Opera, French cuisine and fancy wines. He told her she wasn’t psychic and she said he was a clean freak. This then had the effect that Niles and Daphne were so turned on that they finally consummated their relationship in less than perfect circumstances &endash; something Niles had been imagining as a perfect union for so long. In fact, it was perfect because there was no big build-up, no unrealistic expectations because it was passionate and spur of the moment.

We all have flaws – fact.  Sometimes we are too close to something or someone to either acknowledge any flaws or too stubborn to talk about them.
