Brake Light Billy!
We've all come across him! It's that vehicle in front whose brake lights come on every time a car passes by on the opposite side of the road. At The Lead Generation Group Ltd we know all about the impact these menaces of the road have on their fellow road users, especially the hauliers in their thirty ton-plus trucks.
I was driving home from work earlier this week, less traffic than usual, no rain – less unusual at the moment and just enjoying a clear run home – or so I thought. Ahead was a brand new Discovery Sport, sleek, big and black with the world's best brake lights! We were on a straight bit of tarmac, nothing ahead of Billy and few vehicles travelling in the opposite direction so. why then, did Billy have to brake every few hundred yards for no apparent reason – other than perhaps the vehicle was too big to handle.
Then of course I got to thinking about how annoying and dangerous this type of road user must be for many of The Lead Generation's road haulier clients. It's easier to keep your distance when the road is clear and there isn't much traffic, but what about when it's busy, you haven't got as much distance between you and Billy, and especially when travelling at a greater speed on the motorway.
Admittedly, you can see further when you're up high in the cab of a lorry, but that just makes the situation more dangerous because you never know when Billy will be putting on the brakes.
Sometimes, when you're running your business too, it feels like you are behaving like Brake Light Billy; things are jogging along nicely, business is doing okay and then, all of a sudden, you apply the brakes because something has gone wrong, or customers are dropping off or external factors are disrupting your work flow.
It's easy to forget, when you are in the throes of setting up your business, or things are really taking off, to remember to have clear contingency plans in place. It's vital to have a back-up strategy for when life throws you a curved ball (or you end up driving behind Brake Light Billy!).
It's always a good idea to have a good strategic marketing and sales back-up plan to stop you plunging into the back of Billy, metaphorically speaking. You can see the brake lights in the distance, but you believe you will avoid the back of him long before he hits the brakes again – but of course that's not always the case, and one lapse of concentration and bang!
